Radiometric Level Transmitter

Radiometric Level Transmitter
Overview

Level measurement from outside the vessel wall. A shielded gamma source and a detector are clamped to the outside of the vessel or pipe, so there are no wetted parts and no process pressure or temperature limits. Ranges to 7 m, 316L detector housing, 4–20 mA HART, FOUNDATION Fieldbus or relay outputs.

Measuring rangeup to 7 m
Process pressureno process pressure limitation due to non-contact measurement
Process temperatureno direct process temperature limitation due to non-contact measurement
Material316L stainless steel housing; no wetted parts

Details

When nothing can be put into the process, a radiometric transmitter measures it from outside. A shielded gamma source on one side of the vessel emits a narrow beam through the wall; a scintillation detector on the opposite side measures how much radiation arrives. Liquid or solids in the beam attenuate it, so the detector signal is a direct function of level, and with a horizontal beam it is a function of density. The vessel is never opened, the process is never touched, and pressure, temperature, corrosion and abrasion are irrelevant.

Transmitters cover level ranges to 7 m, for point or continuous measurement, and are mounted externally on the vessel wall or pipe with mounting sets; the detector housing is 316L stainless steel and there are no wetted parts. Outputs are 4–20 mA HART, FOUNDATION Fieldbus or relay. Pneumatic on/off shutters close the source for maintenance access, and protective caps and mounting sets complete the installation.

The technology is regulated: source licensing, radiation protection and periodic leak testing are part of the project, and we support the application from source sizing through installation and commissioning.

Applications are reactors and high-pressure, high-temperature vessels, corrosive and abrasive media, density and interface measurement, and processes such as coking, polymerisation and slurry handling in refining, petrochemical, mining, cement and nuclear industries.
