Details

The vortex flowmeter is the standard instrument for steam and the natural choice for gases and clean liquids where a magnetic meter cannot work. A bluff body across the pipe sheds alternating vortices, exactly as a flagpole does in wind; a sensor behind it counts the vortices, and their frequency is linearly proportional to velocity over a wide range and independent of fluid properties. The output is a pulse or a scaled analogue signal, with no drift because frequency cannot drift.

Meters cover ½" to 14" in welded, flanged or wafer versions for velocities up to 75 m/s, pressures from full vacuum to 160 bar and temperatures from −196 to +450 °C, the last making them suitable for superheated steam and cryogenic service alike. Wetted parts are 316 / 316L stainless steel, CF3M, Hastelloy or duplex.

The multivariable versions add an integrated temperature sensor and pressure sensor with flow computer, so a single instrument delivers compensated mass flow or energy for saturated and superheated steam, and standard-condition volume for gases, using built-in fluid-property tables. Outputs are 4–20 mA HART, pulse, FOUNDATION Fieldbus, PROFIBUS, Ethernet or Modbus.

Vortex meters are used throughout chemical, petrochemical and power plants for steam distribution, boiler feed, fuel gas, compressed air and solvent lines.
